How to Set and REACH Your Goals
People who don't set their goals in writing
are doomed forever to follow the goals of those who do!
Believe it or not, a goal is a fairly common thing.
At one time or another, EVERYONE has a goal. But
having goals that are effective, aligned with your
personal values and following them...THAT's a different
story. That's rare.
You must see yourself succeeding
Having goals is like going to a grocery store with a good shopping
list. You spend less time and less money when you know exactly what
you want to buy.
On the other hand, when you go there just with "a pretty good idea"
you end up with a whole bunch of things you really didn't need. Even
with stuff that can be bad for your health! And on top of that you
might forget the important items that brought you to that store in
the first place. You buy products that merchants put on display
to dazzle you and to compel you to buy. Without a shopping list
you are fulfilling the goals of the merchants, but not yours.
I have a feeling that you know about goals. And you know that
setting them effectively is one of the keys to succeed.
But there is more to it. You must also develop the ability to
see yourself reaching your goals, imagining taking specific
action to fulfill them. Actually, in order to succeed, you
need to act "as if" long time before the success really happens.
What is your perfect scenario
The majority of business people lack this imagination - that's why so
many fail in their enterprises! Even if they stop for a moment to
think about their future and even if they write down their goals -
usually their "end-scenario" is a rather sketchy and foggy picture.
Far away from that really sharp and detailed vision you should
carry in your mind.
The beginning of the year is a perfect opportunity to spend some time
on inventing your own future. Chances are that you don't know what
you really want to accomplish. Most people think they know what
they want, but usually they don't.
How about you? Sit down and write 2-3 pages describing in detail:
how is it going to look like when finished? I mean your business -
because you are still building it, right? Imagine it at the moment
when it is already running *perfectly*. Perhaps 3 years from now,
or 5 - or just in one year. What are your doing - specifically?
Where? How have things changed (hopefully a lot - but specifically
what and how?) What gives you the biggest pleasure and what is your
biggest headache (because you will ALWAYS have business headaches,
that's a promise!)
Who are your customers? Where they come from? What are they doing?
What are their problems (you know their problems, because you are
solving them - what kind of problems will you be solving?) And
what are your clients saying about you? Do they say anthing at
all? How do you affect their lives?
And how do you know that what you are doing in that ideal future
business is really *IT* for you? How do you measure your success
in this ideal picture?
Success starts with knowing very specifically what you want. Only
then you should concentrate on objectives or short term goals.
Because only then you can take a full advantage of the opportunities
knocking on your door without having these opportunities taking
advantage of you.
Understand your reticular activator
Of course it helps to understand how our brain works. Make it your
goal for 2003 to read more about self-development. After all you
want to become very skilled in running this important computer:
your own brain!
Take, for example a group of cells called the Reticular Activator
System. Its job is to decide which of the information bombarding
your nervous system non-stop is the most valuable to you. Then it
allows the most important signals (only those that are important)
to reach your consciousness. In essence, the reticular activator
filters your thinking and helps you make decisions. And it can be
programmed just like the computer! By objectives and by precisely
defined outcome of what you want to accomplish.
It is difficult to imagine how we could function without this
system working properly. We would be so overwhelmed with the
millions of information entering our brain all the time, that we
would go crazy!
Once you choose your goals, and start to move towards them, your
mind becomes clear and focused. Information needed to accomplish
your goals flows through and everything that has no value to the
achievement, gets blocked and filtered out.
When you understand how your reticular activator works, you become
virtually unstoppable on your way to success! Without a doubt it
is the best software in the entire cyberspace!
